The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has approximately fixed the retail prices of 65 medicines. Along with this, the prices of 20 medicines have also been fixed. These medicines include medicines for type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, bacterial infection and pain killers are also included in this list. Apart from this, the prices of medicines have been changed. They have distilled water used in injections and vaccines for diseases. Their prices have been decided in the NPPA meeting.
The price of 65 medicines has been fixed
The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has fixed retail prices for 65 new drugs and notified maximum pricing for 13 drugs. The regulatory body under the Department of Pharmaceuticals has approved the inclusion of the impact of 0.00551 per cent increase in drug prices in the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) for 2024 based on changes in the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for seven more medicines. The maximum price has also been revised. During the 128th meeting of the authority on December 12, the decision to revise the prices of these medicines was taken.

Revision and determination of retail and ceiling prices is a regular function carried out by NPPA. The drug pricing regulator is entrusted with the responsibility of fixing and revising the prices of pharmaceutical products, enforcing the provisions of the Drug Price Control Order (DPCO) and monitoring the prices of both controlled and deregulated drugs.

In a recent government notification, the retail prices of the combination of essential fixed combination drugs (FDCs) such as atorvastatin and ezetimibe tablets have been fixed. They are used to treat high cholesterol by reducing “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and triglyceride levels. FDCs are drugs that contain a combination of two or more active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in a single form, usually manufactured and distributed in a fixed ratio.
